By 2020, I had returned to songwriting and had produced and released eight original songs, each performed by other vocalists. Seeking to expand my horizons, I enrolled in Catch the Moon Music's 6 Figure Songwriting (6FS) program—a 12-week live mentorship designed to guide musicians through the process of creating and pitching songs for ads, TV, and film.
6FS was my first time engaging with a broader community of musicians, producers, singers, and songwriters. It was both fascinating and intimidating. During this course, I became familiar with Michael Averill, a mentor whose teaching style and music resonated with me, even though he wasn't my assigned mentor.
Then, on March 2, 2020, Michael issued this birthday challenge:
🚀 Do something outside your comfort zone.
🚀 Share it.
🚀 Tag me.
I thought about it. For two years, I had been avoiding sharing my own voice. I wasn’t "a singer," right? But something about Michael's challenge felt like a nudge I couldn’t ignore.
So, despite my nerves and shaking voice, I sat down at my keyboard, took a deep breath, and recorded myself singing Come On Home—the song I had written in Writing into Light.
That moment became the very first Music Monday episode.
This is what I wrote when I posted it:
"Okay, I have put off sharing any unproduced songs for 2 years. In honor of a new friend’s birthday and the fact that ya gotta jump in at some point, here is Come On Home."
What started as a one-time challenge turned into something bigger. The next Monday, I did it again. Then again. And again. Now, 259 Monday's later, I am on the eve of celebrating Music Monday's fifth anniversary. I can barely believe it.
🎤 What’s something that feels outside your comfort zone? What would it take for you to try it?
